Internet Marketing Success or Failure

August 27, 2008

Internet marketing can be a very exciting and rewarding career. Done properly, this viable home based business opportunity will allow you to finally become a self employed entrepreneur. However, many people have failed at this venture. Why? There are two main causes of failing to achieve success in any type of internet marketing adventure:

1. Believing the road to success will come easy.

2. Forgetting that it is not “what” you know, but “who” you know.

Believing that you can “throw” together a website and make it “live” on the internet will instantly create over-night revenue into your bank account is disheartening. A few “lucky” entrepreneurs have seen this happen, but for 98% of those who have tried fail. It takes much more work, dedication and never ending reading and learning, to accomplish eventual success in the world of internet marketing. The seemingly simple task of choosing a domain name is actually one of the first steps that will make you or break you.

If the domain name you choose is not eye-catching enough or conveys what the content of the site is all about, who will ever find them? The name you choose may show creativity, but without being rich in keywords, the search engine bots will not be able to perform the proper indexing in their listings. This is just one example that can lead your IM business into the 98% failure rate.

Why do 98% of those who try fail? There are many reasons, but I believe the number one culprit is simply they had no idea of how much work is actually involved. Because of this, they simply give up. It may take two, three or even four years before you may see a steady flow of profit streaming to your bank account. Then again, it may only take six months! If you give up early in the game, how will you ever know?

Secondly, many internet marketers will attempt to “go it alone” throughout the entire process. Self motivation is a great virtue, but would it not be much easier to have “someone” on your side, guiding you along? Someone who is adverse in the IM game and who has already achieved the success you are just beginning to work on?

There are many internet marketing “Gurus” and “Masterminds” out there who offer memberships to their highly successful programs, where an endless amount of resources, products and marketing lessons are provided to their members. These resources, products and lessons are your tickets to establishing a successful internet marketing business. They have already done what you are just beginning to do. Imagine being able to ask a question through email or even by telephone, to one of these marketing experts. In this highly competitive field, it could boil down to “it’s not what you know . . . it’s who you know!”

Remember, building a successful IM business will take time, effort and research. Having a successful mentor behind you will guarantee success. By accepting and utilizing these two aspects of internet marketing, you will find yourself in that ever elusive 2% success rate.

Selecting the Best Domain Name

August 21, 2008

Domain names are to websites as book covers are to books. If they are not interesting enough, or don’t properly convey what a website is about, visitors will have no desire to enter them into their browsers. Yet, excessive creativity could also lead to your website receiving little traffic as well. Why? Because if a domain name is creative but not keyword-rich, search engine bots will not be able to index it in the search engine listings. So, ultimately, your domain name must be both eye catching and search engine optimized. This article will explain how you can achieve both objectives.

First and foremost you can utilize a keyword generator tool that can be incorporated into your domain name. There are many keyword analyzers that can help you in this task. These can be found pretty easily with a basic search engine query. When you find one, enter in a keyword that best summarizes the purpose of your website. The keyword analyzer will return different versions of the keyword you typed in. If the more specific instances can also fit within the nature of your website, choose one. This is because when it comes to search engine optimization, more specific keywords are better since they are less likely to be used by other webmasters.

Now you can start selecting your actual domain name. Most domain name companies will allow you to see whether or not your domain name is available. If it is not available, it will return a list of recommended domain names. Take advantage of this tool by first entering your selected keyword. If your keyword as a domain name is not available, consider the suggestions the domain name company gives. If the main keyword is still included in these suggestions and it ends with the infamous “dot com,” then naturally consider it. Otherwise, you will have to be more creative.

For example, you can use what are known as “filler” words, numbers or phrases within your domain name to still include your selected keyword. Fillers could be ‘a,’ ‘an’ or ‘the.’ Search engines tend to not look at these words, so you still have a good shot at getting indexed while having a domain name that is memorable and catchy. You can also consider fillers at the end of a phrase, such as “101,” “teaches” or “thebestchoice.”

What if you do these things and you are still unable to get the all wanted “dot com”? Well, there are some situations where it is best to stick with a lesser-used extension because the keyword is still so popular. Extensions that still get noticed include .net, .biz and .org. Additionally, you can also consider using country or state-based extensions if you don’t mind international or local-based marketing. It would naturally be better to rank number 1 in France’s version of Google than to be number 200 in America’s Google.

In conclusion, choosing a domain name that will get the best activity from both humans and search engines does not have to be difficult. A keyword analyzer will help you with 90% of your domain name, while your experimenting with filler words can help you with the other 10%. And, if you are still unable to land the “dot com” for your extension, you can always opt for one of the other choices and still achieve excellent rankings and web traffic.

Web Video Audio Tips

August 21, 2008

Filming a web video requires attention to even the smallest and slightest detail. However, if you have never filmed a web video before, then you may only be concerned with how the video looks. While this is very important, there is something that you must pay attention to even more importantly than how the video looks. If you have ever watched a web video, and the audio was off, either it were too quite or it did not match with what was happening on the screen, you probably stopped the video and went to another website, right?

This is because the audio of a web video is extremely important in getting your message across. But how do you ensure that your web video has great audio quality?

The main step to having amazing audio with your web video is to make sure that you have all of the proper equipment. Now, this does not mean that you have to go out and purchase a $1000 boom microphone that motion pictures use, however, it does mean that you will need to have at least the basic equipment needed. Many times when people film a web video, they simply use the microphone that is located on their video camera. While this may be passable for more visually-focused web videos, many videos require a person to speak.

When you use the pre installed microphone on your camera, you are going to get low-quality sound, and if it is windy outside, or if there is any type of background noise, your audio will come out with poor quality. This is why having a decent hand-held microphone is very important.

If you are worried that holding a hand-held microphone will make your web video look “cheap,” there are several ways to cheat the system. If you have more than one person helping you with your web video, simply allow the extra person to hold the microphone out of frame while you are speaking. This will ensure that you are clearly, and professionally heard, but you will not have to worry about holding an awkward microphone, which is seldom seen in marketing. However, if you do not have an extra person to hold the microphone, you can simply place the microphone close to you, but keeping it out of the shot. In order to do this, you may want to have a close-up done on yourself, or the subject that you are filming.

Since the frame will be closer on you, you will not have to worry about the microphone showing up in the shot. You can place the microphone on a table by you, however, this may result in strange noises, especially if you live in an apartment complex or any such place where noises may result. A great tip on filming and recording audio in this manner is to hold the microphone in your lap, facing it toward your mouth.

This will let you have a shot that is focused on your mid-waist and up, as well as allowing the microphone to be close enough to your mouth to record the audio. Make sure that you speak louder than you normally do when the microphone is in your lap, however, don’t yell. Web videos become even more awkward when the speaker is having to force themselves to be louder.
